Damp Proof Paint vs Chemical Treatment — Why Paint Alone Fails
Waterproof paint feels like the cheap fix. Here's why it comes off within a season and what actually works long-term.
Every hardware store on the Reef sells 'damp proof paint' for under R400 a tin. Homeowners buy it, slap it on, and are back on WhatsApp a season later asking why the damp came through. Here's the honest reason.
What damp proof paint actually does
It's a thick acrylic that forms a film on the OUTSIDE of your wall. It temporarily hides the damp patch. But the wall is still wet — moisture just builds up behind the film until the pressure lifts it off the surface (bubbling, flaking, blown paint). Six to twelve months, back to square one.
What chemical damp proofing does
A silane/siloxane treatment like Damp Gone Xtreme soaks INTO the brick and reacts chemically with the silica to form a permanent hydrophobic barrier inside the wall itself. The brick can still breathe (vapour out), but liquid water can't rise or penetrate. Result: dry wall for 10+ years.
The verdict
Paint hides the problem. Chemistry solves it. If you're about to spend R2,000 on damp paint for a lounge wall, spend R1,500 on a Damp Gone Xtreme 5L kit instead — same weekend, fixed properly.
